Massage - A Powerful Ally
Massage is one of the oldest healing arts: Chinese records dating back 3,000 years document its use; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments; and Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems.
There's no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your health care regimen.
Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. Alleviate back pain and improve range of motion.
Getting a massage can do you a world of good. And getting massage frequently can do even more. This is the beauty of bodywork. Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you'll be and how youthful you'll remain with each passing year.
In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects. Research continues to show the enormous benefits of touch, which range from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles.
Consequently, the medical community is actively embracing bodywork, and massage is becoming an integral part of hospice care and neonatal intensive care units. Many hospitals are also incorporating on-site massage practitioners and even spas to treat post surgery or pain patients as part of the recovery process.
Common Benefits of Massage Therapy

- Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
- Improve the condition of the body's largest organ, the skin.
- Increase joint flexibility.
- Relieve stress.
- Lessen depression and anxiety.
- Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
Various Massage Therapy Techniques Used
ORTHOPEDIC MASSAGE - Combining some elements of sports and medical massage, orthopedic massage integrates many modalities to treat soft-tissue pain and dysfunction. Emphasis is placed on understanding both the dysfunction and its rehabilitation criteria. Three basic elements adhered to, despite the technical diversity in treatment, are assessment, matching the treatment to the injury, and adaptability of treatment.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE - Techniques that utilize deep-tissue/deep-muscle massage are administered to affect the sub-layer of musculature and fascia. It helps with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation and reduces inflammation-related pain caused by arthritis and tendonitis. It is generally integrated with other massage techniques.
TRIGGER POINT THERAPY - Trigger point myotherapy is a noninvasive therapeutic modality for the relief and control of myofascial pain and dysfunction. Treatment consists of trigger point compression and passive stretching. Success may be measured subjectively by the level of pain reduction experienced by the client and objectively through increased range of motion, strength, endurance, and other measures of improved function.
STONE THERAPY - Stones of all shapes and sizes and varying temperatures, ranging from zero to 130 degrees, are used to encourage the exchange of blood and lymph and provide soothing heat for deep-tissue work. Cold stones aid with inflammation, moving blood out of the area. The alternating heat and cold of thermotherapy brings the entire body into the healing process, with a rapid exchange of blood and oxygen and alternating rise and fall of respiration rate as the body seeks homeostasis.
MUSCLE ENERGY TECHNIQUE - Muscle energy is a direct, noninvasive manual therapy used to normalize joint dysfunction and increase range of motion. The use of body positioning and isometric contraction of specific muscles increase strength, flexibility and re-educate joints and muscles. These directed movements help correct neuromuscular and joint difficulties.
BRAIN GYM - Brain Gym is a sensorimotor program based on research by educational therapists, developmental optometrists, and other specialists in the fields of movement, education, and child development.
CHAIR MASSSAGE - Known as seated massage or chair massage, this technique involves the use of a specially designed massage chair in which the client sits comfortably. Seated massage includes bodywork techniques, such as trigger point, myofascial release, and Swedish massage, provided to the fully clothed client in a variety of settings.
SPORTS MASSSAGE - There are three contexts in which sports massage can be useful to an athlete: pre-event, post-event, and injury treatment. Pre-event massage is fast-paced and stimulating, it helps to establish blood flow and to warm up muscles. During the massage, the athlete generally focuses on visualizing the upcoming event. Post-event massage is also to calm the nervous system and begin the process of flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. Post-event massage can reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training much sooner than rest alone would allow.
